Okeeheelee Park, FL

June 20, 2014

Around this time of year in a South Florida you can expect a warm and sunny morning/early afternoon followed by a dark and stormy late afternoon/evening. We were looking for somewhere close and quick to spend a few morning hours meandering and kayaking and chose Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach, FL.

Okeeheelee Park is a large Palm Beach County park so it’s not exactly a hidden gem, but we went on a Friday morning so it was dead. There are the usual park amenities as well as some paved and dirt running/bike trails and the lake. This park is actually way bigger than I initially thought, I imagine it can get pretty busy on the weekends but it was straight up delightful for a relaxing weekday morning.

Kayak King Watersports operates at the lake and rents kayaks and paddleboards. We were helped by Roger, who told us that they give discounts to repeat customers. This is the link to their Facebook page:

We first walked around the trails then rented kayaks and paddled around the lake for 2 hours. The water is perfectly clear so saw a few turtles, an egret, and some fishies, but nothing crazy. There’s also a nature center but it has limited hours in the summer so I didn’t see what they have in there. It was a very serene day in the sunshine dipping our toes in the water.
